Bukchon and Samcheong-dong

Hanok lanes, a second palace and the Samcheong-ro galleries

Bukchon sits between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, and most of it is still a residential neighbourhood. Samcheong-ro, along the palace wall, has the national art museum and several galleries. The nearest station is Anguk, on Line 3.

Bukchon is not a theme park. The alleys of Bukchon-ro 11-gil are restricted to tourists from 17:00 to 10:00 the next morning, with a ₩100,000 fine enforced since March 2025. Visit between 10:00 and 17:00, keep quiet and don't wander into residential doorways.

Changdeokgung is the better palace for the hills and gardens. The Huwon garden is by guided tour only, and English tours run a few times a day. It is closed Mondays. Unhyeongung, near Anguk, is free.

Along Samcheong-ro, MMCA Seoul charges per exhibition, with free late opening on Wednesday and Saturday evenings (18:00 to 21:00). Kukje Gallery and Gallery Hyundai are close by. The Seoul Museum of Craft Art is free and stays open late in autumn.

Getting there

Anguk Station (Line 3) is the hub. Exit 2 leads to Bukchon-ro, exit 1 to Samcheong-ro and the craft museum, and exit 3 to Changdeokgung's approach and the culture centre.

What to see

Do the village in the morning and the galleries after lunch. The Bukchon Traditional Culture Center, free and closed Mondays, is a good place to get oriented before the lanes. The Gahoe Museum charges ₩5,000.

Where to eat and drink

Low Roof (closed Mondays) and Chamasineun Teul Chatteul (closed Tuesdays) are hanok-style cafes on Bukchon-ro. Closing days differ, so check before you cross town.
