Dongdaemun
Late-night fashion malls, a design landmark and the city wall's hills
Dongdaemun is Seoul's wholesale fashion district, and it comes alive at night. It also has Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a stretch of the old city wall and the hill villages around Naksan.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza opened in 2014 and is open 10:00 to 20:00, varying by space, and closed on 1 January, Lunar New Year's Day and Chuseok. The LED Rose Garden on its grounds looks best after dark. Dongdaemun History Museum, in the same park, is free and shows artifacts excavated from the site, including remains of the old city wall.
Doota Mall stays open until midnight, and hours vary by store and mall across the rest of the market. Pyeonghwa Market trades mostly at night for wholesale buyers.
For a walk, start at Heunginjimun Gate, the east gate of the old city wall, and visit the free Seoul City Wall Museum. Naksan Park runs along the wall, is free and open 24 hours, and Ihwa Mural Village is next to it. Dongmyo Flea Market is near Dongmyo Station.
Getting there
Dongdaemun History & Culture Park (Line 2/4/5) exit 1 is at DDP, exit 14 for the markets. Dongdaemun (Line 1/4) exits 8 and 9 serve Doota and the gate. Hyehwa (Line 4) exit 2 is the entry to Naksan Park. Dongmyo (Line 1/6) exit 3 is for the flea market.
What to see
Plan the day in two halves. Mornings suit the wall museum, History Museum and Naksan Park. Evenings suit DDP and the night malls. The Cheonggyecheon Museum is east in Seongdong-gu by Yongdu Station, free and closed Mondays. From November to February it's also closed on weekends and holidays.

Food is scattered. For a proper meal, head back toward Euljiro 3-ga.

Dongdaemun Shopping Complex and Shopping Town Market
Monday to Saturday, closed 2nd and 4th Sundays. Next: Mon 2 Nov · Dongdaemun Market, Jangchungdan-ro
Hours vary by store. The complex is closed on the 2nd and 4th Sundays, only wedding supplies and home interior stores are partly open on other Sundays, and it also closes during summer vacation, Chuseok, Lunar New Year and New Year's Day.

Naksan Section Seoul City Wall Docent Walk Exhibition

The Seoul City Cultural Docent Naksan walk meets at Exit 7 of Dongdaemun Station. The route runs past Heunginjimun, the Hanyangdoseong Museum, Naksan summit viewpoint and Naksan 1-gil. Booking is on korean.visitseoul.net.
