Myeongdong

Cosmetics lanes, a brick cathedral and a market that never fully closes

Myeongdong is where Seoul's cosmetics and street-food crowds meet, packed into a few pedestrian lanes off Line 4. Myeongdong Cathedral sits on the hill above them, and Namdaemun Market is to the south.

The main shopping lanes run off Myeongdong 8-gil. Shop hours vary by store, and the food stalls fill the main lane once the afternoon crowds arrive.

For a break from the noise, Myeongdong Cathedral is uphill from the main lanes. The brick Gothic church was finished in 1898 and you can't enter during Mass. The Money Museum and Shinsegae's main store are both by Hoehyeon exit 7, and Sungnyemun Gate is nearby.

Food here is serious. Myeongdong Kyoja is known for chicken-broth kal-guksu, and Hadongkwan serves only gomtang and boiled beef from 7:00 until it sells out.

Getting there

Myeong-dong Station (Line 4) exits 5 to 10 put you on the main lanes. Euljiro 1(il)-ga (Line 2) exit 5 is the stop for Hadongkwan and Dongpyo Golbaengi. Hoehyeon (Line 4) is the stop for Namdaemun Market and Shinsegae. Seoul Station (Lines 1 and 4) is the stop for Seoullo 7017 and Culture Station Seoul 284.

What to see

Start with Myeongdong Cathedral in the morning, then walk down to the shopping street when shops open. Namdaemun Market is open early and many stalls close on Sundays. Sungnyemun Gate is nearby and open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00.

Near Seoul Station, Seoullo 7017 is a 24-hour elevated walkway, free to enter, and Culture Station Seoul 284 in the old station building is free and closed Mondays.

Where to eat and drink

Namdaemun Kalguksu Alley is a lane of kal-guksu stalls inside the market, and no hours are listed, so go at lunch. Hadongkwan closes at 16:00 and on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month. Dongpyo Golbaengi opens at 16:00 for sea snail dishes and is closed Sundays.
