Itaewon and Hannam-dong

Two big museums, a war memorial and late-night bars on Itaewon-ro

Itaewon and Hannam-dong sit next to each other, and most of what you'd visit is on or just off Itaewon-ro. Hannam-dong has the museums and galleries, and Itaewon has the bars and the older shops.

The Leeum Museum of Art is on the slope above Hangangjin Station, about a five-minute walk from exit 1. Its permanent Korean antique art display is free, while the special exhibitions are ticketed and booked online. Pace Gallery is by the same exit and opens Tuesday to Saturday.

The National Museum of Korea and the War Memorial of Korea are both free and both larger than they look on a map. The museum's galleries are open until 21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday. The war memorial closes at 17:40 and is shut on Mondays and the day after national holidays.

Itaewon itself is mostly an evening area. Prost Pub & Grill runs until 06:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and All That Jazz is a live jazz club that opens at 18:00. The Seoul Central Mosque is about 477 m on foot from exit 3 and welcomes visitors who dress modestly.

Getting there

Itaewon (Line 6) is the main station for the bars. Hangangjin (Line 6), exit 1, is closest to Leeum and Pace Gallery. For the National Museum of Korea use Ichon (Line 4 or Gyeongui-Jungang), exit 2, and for the War Memorial use Samgakji (Line 4), exit 11.

What to see

Plan around opening days. Leeum, Pace Gallery and the War Memorial are all closed on Mondays, so a Monday works better for the National Museum of Korea, which is open daily (check its notices for galleries closed for works). Shop hours on Itaewon Antique Furniture Street vary and aren't published, so go in the afternoon.

Where to eat and drink

Takeout Drawing and HIT Coffee Roasters cover the coffee side near Hangangjin and Itaewon stations. For dinner, Bangul & Kkomak is a seafood tavern between Hannam and Itaewon and closes on Sundays. The Baker's Table, on Noksapyeong-daero, opens at 08:00 and is a good first stop if you're walking east.
