Mangwon

A neighbourhood market, a riverside park and a battleship you can board

Mangwon is a residential area west of Hongdae with a working market and the Han River nearby. It suits a slower day than Hongdae.

Mangwon Market is by Mangwon Station exit 2 and runs daily from 10:00 to 21:00, with hours varying by stall. A few stalls don't take cards, so carry some cash.

Mangwon Hangang Park is on the river, with a swimming pool, sports fields and a bike path of about 3.1 km. It's about 1.5 km from Mangwon Station by Visit Seoul's measure. Seoul Battleship Park is nearby and has decommissioned ships you can board, for ₩3,000 an adult, closed Mondays.

Closer to Hapjeong, the Jeoldusan Martyrs' Shrine is about 500 m from Hapjeong Station exit 7, and the Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery is reached from the same exit.

Getting there

Mangwon Station is on Line 6. Hapjeong Station is on Lines 2 and 6, and Sangsu Station on Line 6 is the stop for Anthracite Hapjeong and Mapo Saebit Culture Forest.

What to see

Do the market first, then carry food to the river. The cemetery and shrine need an hour each and fit on a Tuesday to Friday morning, since the shrine is closed Mondays and the cemetery Sundays.

Where to eat and drink

The market is the main place to eat. For coffee, Anthracite's Hapjeong branch uses its old conveyor belt as a counter and takes last orders at 21:30.
